Since Nieman Reports last wrote about the unprecedented number of news workers killed in Gaza, in our Spring 2024 cover story, the tally has more than doubled to nearly 200, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
The final week of August has been particularly deadly. Five journalists were killed in the line of duty on Aug. 25 during Israeli airstrikes on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, a deeply troubling incident that the Israeli government called a “tragic mishap” but that has been widely condemned.
The Associated Press and Reuters, both of which lost colleagues in the attack, have demanded a transparent accounting of what happened. “These journalists were present in their professional capacity, doing critical work bearing witness. Their work is especially vital in light of Israel’s nearly two-year ban on foreign journalists entering Gaza,” the two news agencies said in a joint letter to Israeli officials.
