Fall 2025/Winter 2026

A New Chapter

The Fall 2025/Winter 2026 edition of Nieman Reports represents the magazine’s final print issue as it transitions to an all-digital format. A combination of factors — many of which are affecting the wider media industry — have resulted in the move to online-only following a nearly 80-year run in print. But the same great journalism about journalism that readers have come to expect from the magazine will continue at niemanreports.org. In fact, it’s been appearing there for years already, including stories that don’t make it into print.

In addition to a cover piece on the history of Nieman Reports, this issue features a lineup of fascinating global media stories: a look at how legacy media in Nepal got caught flat-footed by a youth uprising; an overview of a new crop of independent progressive media outlets sprouting up in France; a piece on how journalists in Myanmar are coping with the abrupt loss of foreign funding; a story about how Sudanese journalists are fighting to keep coverage of their homeland alive; and a feature on women-led radio stations around the world. There are also stories on what’s happening in the U.S., including a deep dive into the legal tactics the Trump administration is using against the press, an analysis of how U.S. newsrooms have retreated from promises to diversify the industry, and a feature on what it’s like to work at employee-owned news cooperatives. And for Nieman news, look for writeups on a spate of new documentaries by Nieman Fellows, alumni moves, and recent talks at Walter Lippmann House.

There’s much to think about and enjoy in this new print edition of Nieman Reports, and even more online. Please continue to follow niemanreports.org for the latest on the state of media worldwide.
