The
2010 Georges Conference on College Journalism brought student journalists from a dozen school newspapers together to explore issues related to social media, journalism best practices and the powerful impact of multimedia reporting. Students heard keynote speeches from two media powerhouses — NPR’s CEO and president, Vivian Schiller, and Alan Murray, deputy managing editor and executive editor, online, for
The Wall Street Journal.
The students also attended sessions with reporters who have lived and worked in countries around the globe; learned how to build their own brand and promote stories; received tips on the art of the interview and had an opportunity to ask Nieman Fellows wide-ranging questions in an open discussion.
The 2010
Christopher J. Georges Award for Excellence in Student Journalism was presented to Jack Ackerman and Michelle Wu, senior writers at
The Daily Princetonian, for their comprehensive five-part series “
University Justice.” Judges also awarded honorable mention to staff writer Christian Flow from
The Harvard Crimson for his two-part series “
Building the Public Domain.” The Christopher J. Georges Award for Excellence in Student Journalism honors exceptional, in-depth reporting by a student reporter on a policy issue of importance affecting his/her campus, community, or beyond.
The 2010 Christopher J. Georges Award for Exceptional Service to
The Harvard Crimson was presented to Charles Wells, a former news executive editor and comp director for the paper.
Funded by the Christopher J. Georges Fund and supported by journalist
Christopher Georges’ family, the annual two-day Georges Conference is designed to provide young journalists with an opportunity to learn new skills, hear from leading media professionals and network with other students working at college newspapers in the Northeast. The event is organized by the Nieman Foundation with logistical support from students at
The Harvard Crimson.
